STARFLEX – Miki Pulley

Double the previous transmission torque (compared to our previous product), a simple jaw coupling

The simple construction of these couplings sandwiches a buffer piece called an element (made of polyurethane elastomer) between two hubs. Elements of two different hardnesses are available so you can select the appropriate one for your torque transmission responsiveness and amount of misalignment. The polyurethane elastomer used in the element enables double the torque transmission of our previous jaw coupling (Miki comparison), and since the design pre-compresses the element, it can also be used without backlash. Aluminum alloy is used as the hub material. The hub may be coupled to the shaft either by key or by clamp.

ALS-ARN Type

Uses an element (polyurethane elastomer) with a hardness of 97 JIS A and a tight-fit construction designed for a pre-compressed shape, so the coupling can be used without backlash.It can be used at high torque and a wide range of motors, from simple servos to general-purpose motors.

ALS-AYN Type

Uses an element (polyurethane elastomer) with a hardness of 90 JIS A and a tight-fit construction designed for a pre-compressed shape, so the coupling can be used without backlash.Elements are less hard than the ALS-R type, so shaft reaction force can be kept down.

ALS-ABN Type

Large misalignments can be absorbed at high transmission torques by using an element (polyurethane elastomer) with a hardness of 97 JIS A, a shape that has a loose-fit construction, and giving the torque transmission surface of the element a crowning shape.

Intermediate Shaft Types

A longer type that uses two couplings and shafts together in combination, this type can be used in applications with shafts that are farther apart.

Hub-shortening Types

These are short t ypes with an additionally processed hub, and can be used when wanting to shorten the entire length.

All-Processed Clamp Types

High-precision-processed hubs ensure a high degree of concentricity, to lower unbalance. These are easy-to-handle clamp types.

Q : How long is the MIKI PULLEY STARFLEX service life?

A : If power transmission is your primary goal, select an appropriate coupling using the selection procedures of the catalog, then you can expect a service life of more than 10 years. Service life will vary with usage environment and conditions and is heavily affected by usage temperature and mounting misalignment. Contact Miki Pulley for details.

Q : Can they be used in excess of the nominal torque?

A : They can, up to ten times daily when operating 8 hours per day, but not in excess of the maximum torque. This assumes startup torque of a motor with a low frequency of starting and stopping.

Q : What exactly is a loose fit element?

A : These elements have a convex (crowning) shape to the torque transmission surface. They greatly increase the permissible mounting misalignment. They are also easy to assemble, since they set a loose fit with the hub. This can reduce the number of work steps.

Q : Does MIKI PULLEY STARFLEX develop no-backlash as it ages?

A : MIKI PULLEY STARFLEX achieves no-backlash by preliminary compression of the element, so it may not be able to maintain nobacklash as the plastic ages. If you are considering using one in no-backlash mode over a long period of time, we recommend setting the service factor based on load property to a high value. If you require high precision control for a longer period, we recommend the SERVOFLEX series of metal disc couplings.
